Leta Smith Merritt
Photos were found in Sedalia, Missouri. The photo of Leta and Leo Smith is a traditional cabinet card; the photo of Leta is a picture postcard. The cabinet card photo was taken about 1905 and is labeled on the front and back “Leo J. Leta Smith” and is in good condition. The photo post card of Leta is also in good condition with some spotting. Leta’s photo is labeled “Leta Smith Merritt-February 5, 1914”
The 1900 census includes a Leta and Leo Smith living in Richland Township, Morgan County, Missouri. The children are living with parents James William and Sallie nee Luckett Smith. Other siblings listed with the family are Luckett, Troy, Ruth, and Launa. Leo and Leta are still living in the same place with their parents on the 1910 census. By 1920 Leta has married A. Raymond Merritt, the census record from 1920 finds Leo and mother Sallie living with Leta and her husband. Missouri marriage records give the date of Leta’s marriage as May 9, 1917. Leo was married to Beatrice Case on August 23, 1922.
The marriage of Leo links the Smith family to another orphaned photo of Beatrice, Earl and Eugina Case. The orphaned Case and Smith photos were found in the same antique store in Sedalia. Many of the Case and Smith family members are buried in the Otterville I.O.O.F. cemetery in Otterville, Cooper County, MO. Records for this cemetery can be found at the Cooper County Genweb site.
