Research Notes

Cabinet card was found in Jefferson City, Missouri, the photo is in good condition with some fading and edge wear. The cabinet card was made at Goldsmith studio in St. Louis, MO. The age of the cabinet card is from the early 1880’s and the subjects of the photo appear to be in their forties. The back of the photo is labeled “Carl and Augusta Tomnitz, parents of Mrs. Mary Von”.

The 1880 and 1900 census from Canaan, Gasconade Co., Missouri list a Karl (Charles) and Augusta Tomnitz, both born in Germany and emigrated from Germany to New York with first child Pauline August 11, 1865. Destination on the immigration record is Hermann, Gasconade Co., Missouri. Children listed in the 1880 and 1900 census records are Pauline, only child born in Germany, Alvine, Friedrich, Mary (married the Von or Vaughn on the back of the photo), Therese, Rosa, Mina, Charles and Bertha. Carl died in 1902 and Augusta in 1921, both are buried in the Matthews Cemetery, Owensville, Gasconade Co., Missouri.

There were no other Carl/Augusta/Mary Tomnitz in the Missouri/Illinois area, I feel quite certain this is the correct couple for this photo.
