Research Notes

The cabinet card photo of Burt Dickson was found in Jefferson City, MO. It is in very good condition with just slight wearing on the edges. The back of this photo states “Burt Dickson next to youngest son of Adam and Harriet Dickson. The top of the back also has the name “Allie” or “Nellie” Dickson. The photograph was done Biely Brothers Photography in Bethany, Illinois. The photographer stamp is embossed which helps to date the photo around 1900-1910.

James “Burt” Dickson

The 1900 census includes an Adam and Harriet Dickson living in Milam, Illinois. Milam is about ten miles from Bethany, where the photo was taken. Children listed with Adam and Harriet are Nina, Allison, Archie, George, James B., Edward and Nellie. James B. is the next to last son and I believe the B stands for some form of Burt. There are no other census matches for an Adam and Harriet Dickson; this must be the correct family. The other name on the back of the photo Nellie or Allie could be one of the sisters listed in the 1900 census. The 1900 census list a birth date for James B. as March of 1884. The date would correspond to the age of the subject in the photo. James and the rest of the family are found in subsequent census years in the same area. The 1930 census from Blue Mound, Illinois list James B. as a music instructor. Find-A-Grave has a James Bertrand Dickson born March 31, 1884 and died in Blue Mound, April 30, 1962.
