Grandma Tolve Attica, Indiana
Research Notes
Cabinet card was purchased in Columbia, Missouri. The bottom of the photo is labeled in blue ink “Grandma Tolve”. The photo was taken at Henney Photography in Attica, Indiana. This cabinet card has scalloped edges which dates the card between 1890 and 1900. The photo is in good condition with some edge wear and spotting. The back of the photo is labeled “Property of C.G. Peterson” The subject of the photo appears to be in her sixties, which would but date of birth about 1830. Unfortunately there is little to go on with the information on the card. Tolve is a unique name and search of the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census reveals only two suspects for the photo.
Matilda Tolve
1870 census for Logan, Fountain County, Indiana list a Matilda Tolve, born about 1824 in Sweden. Matilda is living with a John, Martin, Amanda and Charles. John is about twenty years older than Matilda but he could be her husband. Martin is 9; if he is Matilda’s son she would have had him when she was 16. Living in the same neighborhood is a Peterson family. 1900 census for Attica, Fountain County, Indiana list a Matilda Tolve born in Sweden about 1831. The Lafayette City Directory for 1885-1886 and 1887-1888 also list a Matilda Tolve living in Attica and is a widow. Most likely this is the same Matilda.
Christina Tolve
The 1860 census list a Christina Tolve born about 1830 in Sweden and living with husband Charles and children Hetta, Charles or Charlotte and Frank in Attica, Indiana. 1870 and1880 census finds the same family living in Red Wing, Minnesota, and more children have been added to the family: Victoria, Victor and Matilda.
