Cabinet card photo was found in Columbia, Missouri and is in fair condition. There is some spotting on the photo, but the details of the portrait are still clear. The style of the card dates the photo about the 1900 to 1910 time period. The photograph was made at Weible’s in Columbia, Illinois. The bottom of the cabinet card is labeled in black ink “Eda Smith”. The back is labeled in pencil and very faint “George Schmidt”. No George or Eda Smith’s can be found in the correct area and time period. However, George and Ida Schmidt can be found in Columbia, Illinois.

The 1910 census from Columbia, Illinois list Clara Schmidt, widow living with her two children George and Ida. George was born about 1901 and Ida about 1904. The 1900 census list a newly married Clara and John Schmidt living with John’s mother Margaretha. John must have died between 1900 and 1910. The 1920 census from Columbia, Illinois show Clara, George and Ida all living together. The 1930 census list George and Ida still living in Columbia, Illinois.

I believe this is a photo of George Schmidt. The writing on the front “Eda Smith” looks to be more recent than the faded pencil “George Schmidt” on the back. The older writing would be closer to the original source thus more likely to be accurate.
