Research Notes

Cabinet card was found in Jefferson City, Missouri, is in fair to poor condition with worn edges, spotting and fading. The style of the card dates it to around the 1880’s. The photo was taken at King Photography in Clyde, Cloud County, Kansas. The bottom of the photo is labeled in blue ink “Frank Rupe (Brother)”. The subject of the photo appears to be about 10 to 12 years-old.

A search of the 1900 census finds a Frank S. Rupe living in Elk, Cloud County, Kansas. Frank’s birth date is listed as September 1876, born in Kansas and working as a printer. Also listed with the family is father John Rupe and mother May (Mary) Rupe. Owen Smith is also living with the family and is listed as step-son. Frank’s mother must have been married first to a Smith. Working backwards to the1880 census the family is living in Elk, Cloud County, Kansas. Frank is living with John and Mary Rupe, however Frank is listed as a Smith, but is clearly labeled as son. Owen is listed as step-son and Alda and Luella are listed as daughters. I believe this is the same Frank Rupe in the photo. There are no other Frank Rupe’s of the correct age and location.

The 1910 census from Gallup, New Mexico list a Frank Rupe with the correct place, year of birth and correct place of birth for parents. Frank is married to Nona and has three children Shuyler, Nadia and Marion. 1920 finds the same family in Grant, Kansas and 1930 in Attwood, Kansas. I can not be sure this is the same Frank Rupe but it seems likely.
