Arey, Ezra

Carte de Visite photos were found in Jefferson City, Missouri. They range from good to fair condition with some spotting and wear. The photos of Mr. Arey and Mr. and Mrs. Arey were taken at E.P. Bushnell in Jefferson City, Missouri. The photo of Mattie Arey was taken in 1876 at Lautour’s in Sedalia, Missouri. Anna or “Aunt Mary” Arey’s photo was also taken at Lautour’s in 1885. All four CDV’s were found together, the handwriting on the back of the photos also appears to be the same.

A search of the 1880 census lists a William and Mary Arey living in Sedalia, Missouri. Children listed with the family are Mattie Arey and Guy Arey. Mattie’s age is listed as seven and would correspond to the age of the CDV labeled “Mattie Arey”. Anna or “Aunt Mary” is not listed with the family; she would have been born after the 1880 census. The 1900 census does not have any definitive matches for this family.

A search of the Missouri marriages does turn up a Mr. Ezra W. Arey and Miss Annie Yost married in Jefferson City, Missouri on October 10, 1871. I find it curious that in the 1890 Veterans Schedule and the1900 census show Ezra and Annie are living in Sedalia, Missouri. Sedalia is where Mattie and Annie’s photos were taken and a search of the 1900 census does not show a William and Mary Arey which match the 1880 family. Additionally Annie and Ezra can not be found in the 1880 census. This family was very confusing until I found this reference from:

Apparently the William is actually Ezra Walton

I think it is apparent the photo of Mr. Arey is Ezra Walton Arey, Mr. and Mrs. Arey is Ezra and Annie nee Yost, Mattie is Martha Louise and Anna Mary is Anna Leona.
