Ann or Sarah Shedden

Carte de visite was found in Jefferson City, Missouri. It is in good condition and is of the later CDV’s. The photographer was Dabbs on Liberty Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dabbs Photography did business in Pittsburg for a number of years, in 1876 he moved to the Liberty Street address. The style of the CDV and the location of the photographer date the photo to the early 1880’s. The subject appears to be about fifty years old and the back of the photo is labeled “Mrs. Shedden”.
A search of the 1880 census list a Sarah Shedden born 1831 in Pennsylvania and living with her family in Green Tree, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Green Tree, Pennsylvania today is an incorporated part of Pittsburgh. Family members are listed as husband John and children Annie, Charles, Fanny and Sarah. The same family can also be found in the 1870 census. The History of Allegheny county states Sarah was the daughter of James Carter. Sarah was the second wife of John Shedden; his first wife was Hannah Bates. Of the children listed with Sarah and John on the 1880 census, only Sarah Ann would have been from the 1867 marriage of John and Sarah nee Carter.
The 1880 census also list an Ann (Ford) Shedden who is of the correct age and place. Ann Shedden was the wife of William Shedden, brother of the above John Shedden.
Both Ann and Sarah are the most probable suspects for the CDV.
