McEuen-Alton, Herbert and Franklin

Research Notes
These two cabinet card photos were found in Jefferson City, Missouri. There are in good condition with just a little wear and spotting. There is some spotting on Alton’s forehead and Herbert’s right cheek. Both photos were taken at Devereaux Brothers Studio in Lansing, Michigan and date to about the mid 1880’s. The back of the single subject photo is labeled Herbert McEuen Brother of Alton (my grandfather) and Frank. The photo of the three men is labeled “Left to Right Alton O. McEuen my grandfather Herbert Frank sons of Albert McEuen and Frances Melton McEuen”. As a genealogist I am just shocked someone would not keep these photos, the entire family genealogy is listed on the back of this card!

The 1870 census from Duplain, Ovid, Michigan list Albert, Frances, Alton O., C. Franklin and Herbert McEuen, this is the correct family for the two photos. The 1880 census finds Alton and Herbert still living at home with Albert and Frances. By the 1900 census all of the boys have married and moved away, Albert and Frances are living alone in Ovid, MI. Albert died in 1901 and his death certificate can be found online at the Seeking Michigan website. Frances died in 1924, they are both buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ovid, Michigan.

By 1900 Alton is living with his family in Chicago and working as a druggist, Frank is in Mason, Michigan and working in a creamery and finally Herbert is teaching high school in Lyons, Illinois.
