Cabinet card was found in Jefferson City, Missouri. The photo is in fair condition with some spotting, edge wear, and a pin hole at the top of the card. Photo was taken in Clyde, Kansas and is labeled “Hazel and Lessie Wellman”. Cabinet card style indicates age from the late 1890’s to 1910. The subjects appear to be about one and eight-years-old.

The 1895 Kansas census has a Wellman family in Clifton, Kansas. Members of the family are L.M., L.E. and Hazel Wellman. The same family can be found in the 1900 census with the addition of Lessie Wellman. Father’s name is listed as Levi Wellman and mother as Lillian. According to the 1900 census the date and place of birth for the family members are Levi born March, 1866 in Indiana, Lillian born March, 1871 in Illinois, Hazel born May, 1892 and Lessie born 1899. Both Hazel and Lessie were born in Kansas. The family is found living in Newkirk, Oklahoma in 1910. A third sister, Bessie born 1907 in Kansas is also listed in the 1910 census record.

The distance between Clyde Kansas where the photo was taken and the home of the Wellman’s in Clifton is about eight miles. I feel quite certain this is the correct family for the photo.
